Launch of the ENC

As EU heads of Government gather in Rome to sign the proposed EU Constitution, a Europe-wide network has been set up to co-ordinate ‘no’ campaign activity in EU member states .

The London-based European No Campaign (ENC), which is backed by the British Vote No campaign, has already attracted 40 members, including 22 MEPs and MPs, from 12 countries and a range of political backgrounds.

The ENC will argue that the proposed Constitution takes the EU in the wrong direct, and that badly needed EU reform can only take place if it is rejected.

Some quotes:

ENC Director Thomas Rupp said “the network has been set up to enable opponents of the Constitution to co-operate, share information and, where appropriate, campaign together in order to maximize the ‘no’ vote in all national referendums on the Constitution.”

UK MP David Heathcoat-Amory said: “This European Constitution is centralising and technocratic - a Politicians Europe. By rejecting it we can build a Peoples Europe which puts democracy first. Whatever our political leanings let us join together in this international campaign for a better Europe.”

“The EU Constitution is a step backwards for European democracy”, says Ian Davidson, British Labour MP, “so it is vital that opposition to it is international.”

"This is a call for a more open and democratic Europe, which actually listens to its citizens,” says Nils Lundgren MEP and leader of the Swedish Junelist. “The EU Constitution will make the EU even more centralised."

“The EU faces a crisis of democratic confidence. The need for radical reform to place social and environmental justice at the heart of a transparent and democratically accountable EU has never been greater – but this proposed constitution is a step away from, not towards, these goals.” Caroline Lucas, Green Party MEP for South-east England

Alex Hickman, Chief Executive of Vote No said “Although European opposition to the Constitution is broad-based, all of us believe this Constitution is a mistake, and that by rejecting it we can have a proper debate about how we can create a democratic and effective EU.”
