Country Information

This section provides information about the EU countries. Currently eleven states have decided to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. The question is still undecided in eight member states, while in five countries it seems to be unlikely, that a referendum will be held. The Parliament of Lithuania has already ratified the constitution.

 

Finland


parliamentary ratification: expected for December 2005 or early 2006

Finns against EU membership. A poll carried out last week by Taloustutkimus has found that a majority of Finns are now opposed to EU membership - 46 percent said that they would vote no if a referendum were held now, compared to 43 percent who would say yes. Support for membership is down 9 points since March. (12 July 2005 - Newsroom Finland


The ruling coalition (Social Democrate, Center Party, Swedish People's Party) already ruled out a referendum in August 2004. Prime Minister Matti Vanhannen (Center Party) claimed that the country’s relationship with the Union would not change enough to warrant a mass plebiscite.
