Danish EU constitution referendum in doubt

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller hinted Monday that his country might abandon a referendum on the European Union constitution scheduled for September 27.

Speaking at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg he said he was afraid that the forthcoming summit of EU leaders in Brussels this weekend would not answer basic questions about the ratification of the constitution.

"The conversations I have had today did not convince me that we will have a clear answer at the summit," he said.

He said that France and the Netherlands "needed time" to think about the future of the constitution after voters there rejected it in recent referendums.
Britain has already said it will not now go ahead with plans for a referendum.
