against the EU Constitution


This series will provide a range of “neutral” arguments against the EU Constitution. Neutral in this context means, that it will try to take viewpoints which are independent of the “classical” ideologies - except the very basic principles of democracy. Therefore these arguments may be useful to all of you.


PART 1 - How the Convention on the
Future of Europe failed the Laeken Declaration

Here you will find some relevant quotes from the Laeken Declaration combined with some critical questions. As you will see, the basic assignment of that declaration - whatever you may think of it - was not fulfilled at all. And now the Constitution is “sold to the people” like it is a great success. PART 2 - A federalist's dream comes true?!
The EU Constitution is a decisive step toward the United States of Europe, argues eminent German Prof Karl Albrecht Schachtschneider in a paper on the EU Constitution. But without the citizens’ participation it will be a state without democratic legitimacy! In the absence of this participation, the creation of a constitution and a European Union with many of the characteristics of a state cannot constitute the creation of a single European people.
